I wear this is a base layer, and in the harsh weather it is great at keeping the heat in. I want to second the comments from another reviewer about the neck. The material is similar to the dual layer long underwear. But the neck on the river driver shirt is high and tight, It comes right up to your neck and gives you a feeling of being impregnable. The medium is a drop big for me, so I order the small, but I DO NOT dry in the dryer. It's got the wool. You know it will shrink. I am slowly replacing all my long underwear tops with the river driver shirts.
A friend from the northeast recommended the river driver as a great base layer shirt for walking dogs in the worst winter weather and she was right! I bought a second one this year. For warmth it beats just a cotton thermal undershirt hands down.
Good weight, and so comfy I often sleep in them.
Technically you're supposed to dry them flat, but I bought them oversized and I tumble dry them on low and they shrink a bit, but still fit oversized, so works for me without the hassle of waiting for them to air dry.
Previously purchased a "river driver" shirt & wanted another one. Got the "Double layer crewneck" by mistake. Cloth is same in both products. just right warmth for cooler days in & out of the house, etc. However, the neck fit is horrible on the double layer underwear crewneck (TA277213). It's way too big of an opening, coming down slightly on my shoulders resulting in constant chill vs the perfect fit and comfort of river driver model (TA237757). Also, I agree with another reviewer about the annoyance of the sewn in tag on the Double layer crewneck TA277213. The river driver does not have a sewn in tag = more comfort. Excellent product!
Been looking for a long time for a garment that could be worn by itself, under a sweater , under a sports coat - whatever. This shirt fits the bill, which isn't too expensive for what you're getting! It can be worn outdoor work/casual, sporty or even dressy. BUT- I was warned that it would shrink - even following washing instructions precisely. I was told prior to buying this shirt that it would shrink one and a half to two inches. But they size a little large. Usually I wear a large tall (6'2",175') but tried on and bought a large. Washed it, dried it and it did shrink but fits beautifully! Again been complimented on this, another LL Bean product!
