I love these shirts, which seem identical to the River Driver's shirts Bean sold a few decades ago, except I don't recall a crewneck version offered then. I wear mine mostly for sleeping (sometimes under a fleece vest) and it keeps me much warmer than any other cotton-blend shirt I own.
It's true the material stretches out a bit, and the sleeves seem to grow on me, but I just turn back the cuffs. I actually like the added length and width while sleeping. The material snaps back to its original shape after washing and hang drying. The full length cotton underlayer protects every bit of skin except around the crewneck band, which has wool on both sides. So be aware of that design if you are especially sensitive. As an alternative, you might consider the River Driver's henley design, which you can leave open at the throat.
Though wool retains heat even when wet, I would avoid working up a sweat in these shirts far from shelter in cold weather. Damp cotton stays damp and could bring down the body's core temp, so I tend to save these shirts for raking leaves, shoveling snow, and taking the dogs for a walk. And sleeping and lounging!
I like the fit & weight of the shirt. Normally I don't wear crew neck shirts because they often fit too tight at the neck. This shirt, which I got in green, is not tight at the neck at all. I like that the hem has an unfinished "look" too.
Very nice shirt if you can stand scratchy wool against your skin. Personally I can't. I wore this once with a T-shirt underneath, and had a red ring around my neck at the end of the day. For some reason it didn't bother my arms at all, only my neck. Aside from that, it is thick and warm. Would be great if they could somehow put a cotton liner in the collar.
