This is not the first pair of Merrell shoes I've owned. I think their shoes are very comfy when you have to do a lot of walking. I wear a size 6 and ordered a size 6 in these boots. I agree with other reviews that it is a bit snug, especially in the calf area. You won't be able to wear any thick socks with these boots. However, they do do their job in comfort, traction in snow, keeping your feet dry and being somewhat more stylish than other snow/rain boots out there. We just had a major snow storm hit us (I live in the DC area) and the roads were out so I walked in these for at least 3 miles in snow, slush, ice. VERY comfortable and it held up well.
They're attractive boots, and warm. However - the outside of the boot peeled off within the first month of wear. Also, after a year - they're no longer waterproof and the sole has come loose....so water leaks in as you walk through the puddles. Also, the tread has worn down to nearly nothing - not good.
I almost didn't buy these based on all the comments about calf size. I'm glad I did, they're perfect for me!
I ordered a 6 and a 6 1/2. I usually wear a 6, occasionally 6 1/2. The 6 1/2 fits perfectly (I couldn't get the 6 on at all (high arches maybe?)) Anyway... The boots have a thin lined wall, about 1/16" The size 6 measured 14" around the outside of the calf area, the 6 1/2 is almost 14 1/2". Both measured 15" at the top. My calves are about 14", comfortable with pants in the boot or trousers over the boot, and not visible at all.
When I ordered these the representative was only able to give me product data for a size 8, and only the top measurement. (I've since forgotten the number.) I suspect that the boot gets wider as the sizes increase.
A perfect boot for business to casual fall & winter wear. Great for commuting by train (and waiting for it in the cold!) I was also able to replace my silly & leaky rain boots with these.
I have a few Merrell boots and shoes as I always found them very comfortable for my flat feet. They are usually a great fit for me. Not these!
The only positive thing about them, sadly, is the look: they look even nicer in real than on the picture.
However: - They are not warm enough to walk outside in winter time (very thin lining). They are just good enough for city life (in and out of stores or the car...) - They do not breath well (sweaty feet). - They are quite narrow - They are not good if you have to wear orthotics (very little space left even if you remove the insole provided). They also ruin the orthotics effect, although I don't know how. But my knees were not aligned properly after. - If you plan to wear warm socks, take a half-size higher (I have 6 other pairs of Merrell shoes/boots and they fit well even with thick socks, not these).
Overall, I woul try those on BEFORE buying, particularly if you wear orthotics or have wide feet.
