I ordered these shoes because they were available in wide (EE) widths. In actuality, the size 12 EE is narrower than my old Merrell size 12 regular. In addition, the back of the shoe does not provide the proper curvature to conform to the heel, and the padded portion at the top that should prevent slippage does not - it is angled back. Last, the tongue portion has many folds that press on the top of the foot. See photo with LL Bean size 12EE on left; Merrel 12 regular in middle, Keen size 12 regular on right.
Great so far! Have not tested water-proofing but do not anticipate any problems. Shoe a bit heavy but comfortable for all day wear. Have not hiked the shoe.
I wanted to buy something that I can wear casually, not hiking, since I already own the amazing gore tex cresta leather hiking boots from L.L. bean for hiking. In addition, I wanted something that will last a long, long time, and I can easily tell by its construction and heavy duty sole that these will far, far, far outlast any sneaker/casual mocassin type shoe. These shoes are only marginally less comfortable than a high quality sneaker. But, BE FORWARNED that the dark brown/chocolate is NOT the color that you see on your screen or in the L.L. Bean magazine. The color is actually closer to graphite/greyish brown. The only reason that I did not return them is that I actually like the color combination.
