Bought these to replace two pairs of the previous Gore-Tex Mountain Hiker model. Had worn those daily for years, a balm to the flat foot needing firm and well-designed sole. Had enabled me to hike anywhere again, in all weathers. Bought low-cut to avoid ankle abrasion from higher-cut. Bought one size and one width larger --- 12 M instead of 11 N -- for comfort. I find this newer model even more comfortable, though perhaps more snug. I appreciate the resilience of a new sole. Old pairs still work well but getting ragged and hard to fumigate. Surprised that new pair accommodates custom orthotics without need to remove Bean insole. May be worn anywhere if you don't mind looking hiker-rustic. Not lightweight.
These are excellent shoes for the advertised task, hiking. Yes the soles are stiff, but when you're hiking the rocky trails of the Adirondacks, you want them to be stiff. I don't have to unlace the top eyelet to get the shoes on and off. They seem much sturdier than the New Balance hikers I last bought from Bean
I ordered my regular size for these shoes since I had 3 pair of them before. (Size 12wide) However, they were too small. Since they did not come in 12 1/2, I exchanged them for size 13. They were much too big. The style has been changed since I ordered them last. Wish they would go back to the old style!
Well, I am on my third pair of these shoes. Right out of the box, the shoes feel great. After a couple of months, the heel area in both of my previous pairs literally fell apart and caused major discomfort and blisters on both of my heels. Hopefully this pair will hold up better.
Otherwise, it is a great shoe for day hikes, cycling, or just wearing around town.
