Ordered one size smaller according to recommendations from other reviewers; even a 40 was too large ; 38 finally fit. Handsome jacket although not trim fit like a typical sport coat. Nice fabric and should be quite practical for my son who does not like heavy winter outerwear.
This is a very nice blazer. The wool is of high quality and it looks nice. However, the major issue is the cut and shape. I purchased a 38 short. The length was correct, but it had the width of a person with a 44 inch waistline. I had to take it to my tailor to have it adjusted. He commented that it looked like I could fit all of my Christmas gifts underneath!! Now that I have paid for it to be adjusted to a real 38S, I think that it is great. However, it seems that LLBean should have done this in the first place. It is time to go back to the drawing board and redesign the sizes of this blazer...
My husband and I were really disappointed with this jacket, unworthy of the L.L. Bean label. The concept is superb, a herringbone sports jacket look with outdoor winter weight, but the way this was constructed was unacceptable. It would be great if improved in both fit and design. First, while others' on-line evaluations said it ran small, ours did not. My husband is very trim, usually a 38 or 39, but in this case the sleeves were extraordinarily long, while the body would not allow for a sweater underneath. The jacket seemed malformed, not just the fit, but the overall proportions. In store, he tried a 40 and it was just as bad and hardly any different from the 38, misproportioned and malformed, perhaps why so many were there at a vast price reduction. As to the brown herringbone, it was muted, appearing smudged. My husband has long worn herringbone sports jackets, so this was a total surprise, as well as a total disappointment. It was his only big gift from me for Christmas, but promptly returned.
I got this for my warm-blooded husband who loves the snow and the cold, but not bulky coats. We live in OH where we get a lot of snow and he felt completely comfortable in this jacket whether walking the dog or going to the office. The arms ran a little long, but that worked well to cover the top of his gloves. A GREAT coat!
