I ordered this jacket for my 10-year old son and my 7-year old daughter. They both loved the jackets and I love the 3-in-1 features. We live in Texas and our winters are not long or terribly cold, but we do need warm jackets for the periods when it is chilly. Now, the weather is rainy, but warm and we just unzipped the fleece inner jacket and the outer waterproof layer keeps them dry.
The inner fleece jacket is easy to put back in place and there are snap enclosures at the neck and arms and zippers on the sides to keep everything in place....great design!
I bought this jacket in orange for my 3 sons (ages 9, 7, and 4) so I could easily spot them on the ski slopes. All three love it. This past weekend was in the 40's, and it was nice to be able to zip out the fleece and just use the shell. As a few other reviewers mention, it seems to run a bit small. I especially noticed it in the 10-12. My 9 year old would normally wear a 10, but the 10-12 is a touch snug. I never thought he'd need a 14-16, but that is what I wish I had gotten. Otherwise, we love them!
My son has yet to wear the pieces separately, but I know we will love the fleece alone, as well as the shell, based on prior experience with these types of jackets with LL Bean. The jacket is holding up great, has shown no signs of wear, and I swear this thing repells dirt, because it still looks brand new!
I purchased two of these coats. One was a size 14/16 and the other was a size 8. Both coats seemed to run a size smaller than it should have. The sleeves were almost to small to get your wrist through, but once on it was a nice coat. My suggestion would be to order 1 size larger than your child would normally wear.
