I got the Extra Large Rolling Duffel in Guide Gold about 3 years ago. It has been on hundreds of thousands of miles of commercial airline flights since then, literally around the world numerous times. The color allows you to spot it from across the airline terminal. It has been easy to roll on streets, sidewalks and packed dirt roads for miles at a time. Notably, I got off the ship in Tonga last year after 5 weeks at sea, it was a 2 mile walk to the hotel on the side of the road. With 40 lbs of stuff in tow there was no problem navigating over broken pavement, cobble stones, dirt pathways and rough sidewalks. I recently went around the world on business again, 3 weeks, with stops in the tropics as well as Northern Europe. Everything for the trip fit easily in the bag.

I purchased extra large duffle bags back in 2006. They have suffered through our abuse and still look new. This is a great product. We travel with pillows and I can pack everything I need for three weeks plus a pillow in my one bag. The same for my hubby's bag. We love them. No more 3-4 bags - one each. They have been drug up and down steps and curbs, across parking lots, etc. Roll great.

I bought my rolling duffle in 2005, after seeing how happy an American friend visiting New Zealand was with his. Since then, my big yellow bag has been around the world seven times in planes, ships, trains and cars, plus many shorter trips to America or Europe, including a five week road trip from California to DC and back along Route 66.
It is scuffed and stained now, but never a rip or break, every zip and strap and wheel functioning perfectly. It has been packed to capacity, rolled across cobblestones, navigated the subways of Paris at peak hour, seen hundreds of cargo holds and luggage carousels from Guernsey to Osaka via Istanbul and every time I see its cheerful bright gold, my spirits lift. I can spot it across a crowded arrivals hall and nobody is likely to pick it up by mistake.
The sled type bottom helps to protect the contents and lets me drag the laden bag up and down stairs. The fabric top allows me to crowd more and more clothing - and books and boots and camera gear - inside, while at the same time making it possible to squeeze this huge bag down to a manageable size with the cinch straps.
It may not be stylish, but it is superbly practical. I love it, simple as that.

Bought this duffle despite first reading all the comments about its easily falling over. Had no trouble when I swiveled the bag 180 degrees while waiting in lines. It stayed up simply leaning against me. And spotting my flowered design on airport carousels is bliss...

I purchased my extra large rolling duffel for a trip to Flordia. Everything for a 3 week trip fit into this bag. I loved the extension handle because I could not even lift the duffel. I will definitely being purchasing more bags in the future. I also took the toiletry case & my backpack. Great quality, excellent service whenever I call customer service.

My husband and I have 3 of these in the deep red. We use them all of the time. We have the large and xlarge and it holds tons but I have to warn you, the clothes are wrinkled when you take them out. I guess it stands to reason since the sides are soft. Over the years, we have only had one small rip in the fabric. All three still zip perfectly and the handles work great.

I love duffle bags...always room to cram a few more things. I also really like the colors on the LL Bean duffles...our bags are ALWAYS easy to pick out on the baggage carousel. We have these in different sizes and colors, with and without wheels and love them all. My one complaint about the wheeled duffles is that there is no stand...so when you're wheeling it and want to put it down, you have to lay it down on the floor and then bend down to pick it up. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of life, but a minor annoyance that is the one reason I'm not giving 5 stars.

not durable and awkward

I'd only had this bag for about half a year, and one time when I picked it up in the airport, it had a huge rip in it where the seam had split. There was no evidence of it being punctured or torn, but it just fell apart. And it doesn't have any sort of stand, so it doesn't stay upright by itself, you have to hold it all the time. The suitcase itself is also really heavy, and adds $$ to back checking fees and is awkward to carry around. Not very durable.

I have this in the Large size and simply love it...it is so durable...have travelled internationally 5 times out of the last 6 years and it has held up outstandingly. Some may say it is pricey however, this is a case of you get what you pay for and you get it all...durable, great looking, all that you will need. Have recommended to friends and have ordered one for a friend...can't say enough about how great this product is...i also have a matching backpack i use for a carryon and the large bag without wheels..they have been with me for these last 5 trips...i will be heading out again in May...so don't look at the price...look at the quality...it is the best.

I have an Extra Large Adventure Duffle bag since 1994, without wheels they didn't make them that way then. It still works perfectly besides being a little color faded. I just replaced that with an extra large with wheels because the extra large gets heavy without wheels. In addition I have one of these duffle bags in every size and almost every trip I go on I somehow end up with one of them with me and they have not failed me yet. They are the best value and highest quality of duffle bags I have ever found. Just buy one!!

light, strong, and holds a lot

I bought this bag in royal blue about six or seven years ago and have used it many times. It holds enough for a three week trip to Asia and yet weighs less than ten pounds when empty, making it easier to keep the packed bag under the airlines' luggage weight limits. The blue makes it easier to spot on baggage carousels, the length makes it possible to bring home large rolled posters, even lightweight carpets, etc.
I did have one problem with the bag until I figured out how to manage it. Under the stresses of baggage handling the zipper pulled open a couple of times, but soon I figured out that if you zip the bag all the way to one end of the bag or the other, it will never pop open. It only ever opened when I locked it in the middle by the handles. So now I zip it all the way to either end, lock it there, and there is no problem.
Great bag, I'd buy it again and recommend it to friends.

I like this bag. The extra-large is huge but lightweight and holds a tremendous amount. The airlines haven't been able to damage it yet. It rolls easily and smoothly. The sturdy bottom protects breakables if padded with clothing. One nice feature is the outside cinch belts which can tighten up the bag and hold everything in place if it is not completely filled to capacity. The zipper seems very sturdy, too. And so many colors! Choose something that will be easy to spot on the airport luggage belt.

I travel by plane at least once a month for business and have used this bag for 4 years. I have colleagues who invest in much more expensive luggage but this bag is an excellent value. I ordered one in lime green and it is so easy to see on the carousel. It holds everything I need for travel and wheels easily even when it is at 49 lbs. It folds flat both at home and on the road so I can slip it under a bed. It isn't waterproof but I pack all my outfits in ziploc bags anyways and have never had anything get wet. I bought one for my college age daugther and this is the bag she uses for breaks since it holds so much. I highly recommend these!

I bought two of these bags for my girls (5 and 7) as we travel alot. I was looking for something cute and that they could be easily transport. This bag is it. They just weathered 5 days of travel and held up great. We got them the pink floral pattern with their names embroidered and the bags have gone everywhere with them - even to afternoon visits with family and friends. As previously stated, the only thing preventing the bag from being 5 stars is that it does not stand on its end. This would be helpful and maybe a feature they could look at incorporating in the future. I would not hesitate to order another bag!

When I was deployed to Afghanistan I knew I would need to pack for 6 months or more. I didn't have anything that would work for that so I bought a large and an extra large rolling duffle. What a great bag. They are sturdy and survived the flight from Atlanta to Afghanistan with no problems. They roll very smoothly. You can pack 6 months worth of stuff easily into the XL size and still have room to hide the body... I like these so much I caved and ordered the medium size as a carry on as well.
2 things they could improve on:
1. You have to lay the bag flat on the bottom when you set it down. It won't stay upright if you try to put it up on the end. This is a hassle especially when you're using one of the big ones. Having room to sit it down on the bottom in the crowded airport can be a bit of a problem.
2. Like others have mentioned I do wish there were a couple of outer zipper pockets to work with as well.

After reading the reviews I decided to give the extra large duffle a chance. I purchased the duffle and it showed up in a week. I was really surprised how big it was and was concerned it was going to be over the weight limit and cost lots to fly. I went out of the country for a week and packed the duffle and it weighed in at 49.8 pounds just under the fifty pound limit. The duffle is very easy to work with as it is on rollers and very easy to transport. The only negative about the duffle is it wont stand upright by itself without tipping but besides that it was absolutely perfect. This very roomy duffle makes any trip a ease to pack for as it holds a lot of items with only handling one piece of luggage.

beware of airline luggage rules

I love my LLBean rolling duffles! I use it for scuba diving trips..perfect for my fins and gear. My bag owes me nothing, and, has seen alot of the world.
However, I just took it to Florida, and, while checking the bag, I was told it was too "big". (not too heavy, Too big). After, several women measured the bag, she still insisted, and , removed it from the plane, remeasuring it out on the tarmack. A supervisor then informed me the bag was too big by inches. I had to pay an additional $49.fee for over sized luggage. (on my return, the attendant simply pulled the straps tight and said it was ok)..Air Tran dimensions are 61inc.for checked bag, seems this bag is 66in.!! Lesson learned for me!!

I have purchased 3-4 of these for the kids heading off to college. I've had two of these duffles that had the rigid bottom of the duffle break. Each time, LL Bean stood by the product and replace them without any hassle.
The Extra Large Duffle is almost too big with the weight restrictions, you have to be careful not to overpack! The last time I purchased a "Large", which is more in line with the new weight limits
Without a divider, the load does shift when you pick it up, if you have heavy items at the handle side. You have to learn to pack the heavy items on the wheel side, and lighter wrinklable items on the upper handle side.

Really Disappointed

LLBean always has a good reputation, but this time I was really disappointed. I work in Afghanistan as a govt contractor and travel back and forth to the US several times a year, which is why I bought the bag. After a little over a year, the zippers ended up completely jammed, and I had to force my way into the bag to get my gear.
